Crowns & Bridgework
If you are faced with tooth loss or the destruction of your tooth’s structure then a crown or bridge treatment may be right for you
Dental crowns and bridgework can be an excellent treatment for replacing missing or damaged teeth, fitting seamlessly in with the rest of your smile. Here at TFI Dentistry at Thornlands and Labrador we offer dental crowns and bridgework in order to help our patients restore the health, appearance and function of their teeth.
Dental crowns
In its most basic sense, a crown is a restoration that is placed over the affected tooth to amend its shape, size, colour or strength. They cover a tooth and may be used for aesthetic or functional reasons.
Crowns are often used to strengthen teeth that have had a root canal treatment as these teeth are more brittle and likely to fracture. They may also be used to repair the following oral conditions:
As a result of the latest advancements in cosmetic dentistry, porcelain crowns are now an effective aesthetically pleasing option. A dental crown will cover the entire damaged tooth and is custom made to suit the shade, size and shape of the surrounding teeth in order to strengthen the tooth and restore its appearance.
Dental bridges
A bridge is essentially a device anchored to surrounding teeth that can replace one or more of the existing or missing teeth. When a lost tooth is replaced with cemented bridgework the teeth on either side of the missing one is prepared with dental crowns to serve as abutments to hold the bridge in place. This procedure usually takes from two to three appointments to complete.
Bridges are a long term solution that can help prevent the cycle of problems that occur when just one tooth is missing, such as the shifting and drifting of remaining teeth and periodontal bone loss. Ignoring tooth loss can prompt any number of the above mentioned conditions which each can be both costly and timely to treat.
